What Are US RECs

US RECs, also often referred to as just RECs, are issued in the United States and Canada. They represent 1 MWh of electricity generated from a renewable source. When a generator produces renewable power, a REC is issued to document its origin. Each certificate includes details such as the generation date, location, and technology type.

US REC Market Overview

The U.S. has one of the most developed REC markets in the world, with multiple regional registries and programs. Some registries are primarily used for compliance, while others support voluntary transactions for corporate sustainability goals. Canada is also integrated into this market and issues RECs through U.S.-based registries. Like most certificate markets, prices fluctuate depending on supply, demand, and regulatory changes. Rules vary by registry, and we help you navigate sourcing, certification, and retirement with ease.

The map below shows the key registries used across North America. For detailed information about each registry and its rules, visit our US REC Market Guide.

Retirement & Claiming Process

To make a renewable energy claim, a REC must be retired. Retirement means the certificate is taken out of circulation and cannot be resold or reused. It ensures that the environmental benefit is counted only once and is linked to a specific reporting period or purpose. When purchasing through our Marketplace, redemption certificates can be downloaded directly from the platform.

Voluntary Schemes

US RECs we provide are aligned with the requirements of all major voluntary schemes.

global corporate renewable energy initiative
emissions accounting standard
